Book review – The Other Side of Here – Shuna Meade

Hi everyone, I hope you are in good health and enjoying the Summer weather we seem to be having, here at least.

I was recently recommended a book titled The Other Side of Here written by Shuna Meade. It is a collection of short stories and poems that have a hint of something beyond what we see. Throughout the stories and poems, this unknown is a constant, in some it is more obvious, in others the story has such a subtle hint that it is almost unnoticeable.

I found I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, I have never really found poetry to be my cup of tea, however I did enjoy the ones found within the book. My favourite stories were A Beginning and an End, Next Train, From Seed, and Song of the Christmas Butterflies. From Seed being my favourite.

I particularly enjoyed how the writing style of the author altered from story to story. I have read a number of books containing short stories written by just one author, and with the exception of Michael Frost and Stewart Bint, I find this talent quite rare amongst the books and works I have read. The styles adopted for each tale fit the story perfectly, and never once did I skip a story because it failed to hold my attention.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially if they enjoy short stories. I look forward to reading more work from this author, and I thank the person who recommended it to me wholeheartedly.
